Mutual activation of PLK1 and Stat3 helps esophageal cancer cells survive and grow

Updated

Abstract

Stat3 directly activated transcription of PLK1 in esophageal cancer cells and mouse embryonic fibroblast cells, suggesting mutual regulation between these two proteins.

  • PLK1 potentiated the expression of Stat3, indicating a feedback relationship.
  • β-catenin is involved in the transcriptional activation of Stat3 by PLK1.
  • The mutual regulation of Stat3 and PLK1 is required for the proliferation of esophageal cancer cells.
  • Increased activation of Stat3 and PLK1 is associated with resistance to apoptosis in both cultured cells and tumor xenografts.
  • Phosphorylation of Stat3 and overexpression of PLK1 were correlated in a subset of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
