Polygala tenuifolia Extract Reduces Lung Injury in Rats by Lowering Inflammation Through TLR4/NF-κB and NLRP3 Pathways

Abstract

Ninety-nine compounds were identified or tentatively deduced from the extract of Polygala tenuifolia.

  • TLR4/NF-κB may be a relevant pathway for preventing and treating acute lung injury (ALI) with this extract.
  • Polygalacic acid is suggested as a potential active ingredient in the treatment effects of the extract.
  • The extract alleviated histopathological lung damage and reduced the wet/dry lung weight ratio in a rat model of ALI.
  • It decreased white blood cell and neutrophil counts in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and reduced inflammatory factor expression in lung tissues.
  • The extract increased the expression of endothelial-type nitric oxide synthase.
  • Findings were consistent in both the rat model and THP-1 cell models.
