Polystyrene Nanoplastics May Cause Inflammation and Aging in Young Mice Through Changes in the Gut Microbiome

Updated

Abstract

Exposure to 1000 μg/L polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) significantly increased cellular senescence markers in young mice.

  • PS-NPs exposure led to elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α.
  • Cellular senescence markers p21 and p16 were significantly upregulated in the lung and liver tissues of exposed mice.
  • PS-NPs appeared to disrupt the oral-gut microbiota axis, resulting in notable changes in microbial diversity and community structure.
  • The expression levels of antioxidant genes were decreased following exposure to PS-NPs.
  • The effects on inflammation and aging may be mediated through the modulation of the p38 MAPK pathway.
