Long-term COVID-19 effects show distinct symptom patterns two years after infection using data analysis

Updated

Abstract

153 individuals, 2 years post SARS-CoV-2 infection, were categorized into groups with and without post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC).

  • Five symptom clusters were identified, explaining 70% of the variance in cognitive and fatigue complaints associated with PASC.
  • Only the first component, which includes persistent fatigue, cognitive issues, and sleep symptoms, was significantly associated with PASC.
  • Cluster analysis revealed two distinct clinical phenotypes among individuals with severe chronic fatigue: one characterized by physical impairment and the other by diminished cognitive performance.
  • The study supports the notion that PASC is a heterogeneous syndrome with extensive interrelated symptoms.
