How often Long COVID patients experience worsening symptoms after activity and fatigue relates to their quality of life

Abstract

Higher post-exertional malaise (PEM) frequency is associated with significantly lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores.

  • PEM frequency and severity are linked to reduced HRQoL among individuals with Long COVID.
  • Higher PEM frequency correlates with a lower EQ-5D index score (ρ = -0.32, p<.001).
  • PEM severity shows a strong correlation with HRQoL reduction (EQ-5D index: ρ = -0.43, p<.001).
  • Greater fatigue and higher PEM frequency independently predict poorer HRQoL after controlling for sociodemographic factors.
