How Common Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Is in People Living with HIV/AIDS

Abstract

The pooled prevalence estimate of PTSD among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) is 32.67%.

  • PTSD prevalence among PLWHA was found to be 25.17% when assessed with diagnostic instruments and 34.68% with screening instruments.
  • Comparable PTSD prevalence rates were observed between high-income countries (31.19%) and low or middle-income countries (34.87%).
  • Moderate and low-quality studies reported a higher pooled prevalence of PTSD (42.64%) compared to high-quality studies (24.84%).
  • The study indicates significant variation in PTSD prevalence among PLWHA based on study location, assessment instruments, and study quality.
