  • Superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) is an important antioxidant enzyme that is susceptible to oxidative modification.
  • Post-translational oxidation of SOD1 may cause its misfolding and the formation of toxic protein species.
  • A cycle of superoxide accumulation and protein damage could impair cellular homeostasis and contribute to skin aging.
  • The interplay between protein damage, SOD1 dysfunction, and mitochondrial issues may lead to chronic low-grade inflammation and skin tissue dysfunction.
