Factors linked to early stronger diabetes treatment in people using GLP-1 medicines, found through machine learning analysis of real patient data

Updated

Abstract

A cohort of 69,194 individuals with type 2 diabetes initiated GLP-1 receptor agonists, revealing a reproducible patient phenotype associated with early treatment intensification.

  • Patients who intensified treatment within 12 months displayed longer diabetes duration and unstable glycaemic control.
  • Prior insulin use and the presence of cardio-renal complications were common among those requiring early intensification.
  • Model 1 demonstrated limited ability to predict early intensification, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.65.
  • Model 2, which identified the same predictors, achieved a higher predictive performance with an AUC of 0.78.
  • The findings suggest that these models could facilitate more personalized treatment decisions in diabetes management.
