Abstract

Cannabidiol (CBD) treatment improved cardiac fibrosis and diastolic dysfunction in a mouse model of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

  • CBD did not reduce cardiac hypertrophy but improved cardiac fibrosis and diastolic function.
  • Improvements were linked to a significant reduction in the accumulation of senescent cells.
  • CBD treatment lowered systemic cytokine levels, potentially related to the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).
  • CBD suppressed inflammation by preserving the distance between organelles and the integrity of Mitochondria-Endoplasmic Reticulum Contact Sites (MERCSs).
  • CBD is suggested to modulate MERCSs communication to influence senescence and inflammation in HFpEF.
