Modified p-Coumaric Acid Reduces Brain and Behavior Changes Linked to Experimental Colitis

Abstract

Mice treated with p-Coumaric acid derivatives showed improved recognition memory and reduced anxiety-related behaviors in a model of colitis.

  • Administration of 3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced significant colonic damage and behavioral impairments in mice.
  • p-Coumaric acid derivatives, including Artepillin C, Baccharin, and Drupanin, were associated with improved colon health and preserved tissue structure.
  • Higher doses of p-Coumaric acid derivatives led to enhanced recognition memory and decreased anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors.
  • Treatment with these derivatives may modulate antioxidant defenses and lower levels of oxidative stress and inflammation markers.
