How common loneliness, anxiety-related sleep problems, and suicidal thoughts are among school teens in Panama and what factors are linked to them

Updated

Abstract

Suicidal ideation was reported by 18.5% of adolescents in Panama, surpassing rates of loneliness (16.3%) and anxiety-induced sleep disturbance (10.4%).

  • Higher odds of loneliness are associated with having no close friends, experiencing hunger, and being bullied on school property.
  • Adolescents lacking close friends and those who were bullied both inside and outside school showed increased likelihood of anxiety-induced sleep disturbances.
  • Factors such as hunger, lack of close friends, school bullying, and alcohol consumption are linked to higher odds of suicidal ideation among adolescents.
  • Girls demonstrate greater susceptibility to suicidal ideation compared to boys under certain risk factors, including lack of close friends and bullying.
  • Parental understanding is associated with significantly lower odds of suicidal ideation in adolescents.
