Relapse-prevention methods after successful electroconvulsive therapy for major depression: a systematic review

Essence

After successful ECT for major depressive disorder, lithium and continuation ECT with medication had the strongest relapse-prevention evidence.

Evidence

A systematic review of 28 studies including 11,119 adults with unipolar MDD after ECT synthesized RCTs, cohorts, and case series with at least 3 months of follow-up.

Caveat

Study quality varied, relapse definitions were inconsistent, psychotherapy evidence was limited, and no rTMS or ketamine studies were found.
