Long-term links between problematic internet gaming and depression symptoms in university students: separating loss of pleasure from low mood

Data from 1,720 university students indicate that problematic internet gaming (PIG) is linked to depressive symptoms.

  • At the group level, PIG is associated with higher levels of anhedonia and depressed mood.
  • Individuals experiencing PIG are more likely to report future feelings of anhedonia.
  • A depressed mood may lead to increased PIG in individuals over time.
