Models predicting disease progression, worsening, and activity in people with multiple sclerosis

Updated

Abstract

A total of 57 studies identified 96 prognostic models for multiple sclerosis, with only 12 receiving external validation.

  • Of the 96 models or validations, 41% were related to disease progression, 8% to relapses, 18% to conversion to definite MS, and 28% to conversion to progressive MS.
  • The majority of identified models (44 out of 75) relied on predictors that necessitate specialist skills or equipment not typically available in primary care.
  • Over half of the models developed lacked accompanying coefficients, tools, or instructions, limiting their practical application and independent validation.
  • All but one of the model developments or validations were rated as having a high overall risk of bias, primarily due to the statistical methods employed.
  • Reporting quality for the models was generally poor, with common deficiencies including unclear sample size justification and missing data details.
