Abstract
Impaired immunonutritional status is common among hospitalized older adults and may be identified using the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI).
- Altered immunonutritional status is linked to changes in gut-brain axis pathways involving immune and inflammatory processes.
- Bacterial and viral DNA in the bloodstream may be associated with immunonutritional impairment as defined by PNI.
- Inflammation levels could correlate with PNI-defined immunonutritional status in older adults.
- Neurocognitive conditions may also be associated with altered immunonutritional status in hospitalized geriatric patients.
