Abstract
Heat shock proteins are implicated in both protective and harmful roles in intervertebral disc degeneration.
- Intervertebral disc degeneration is linked to low back pain and functional impairment.
- Heat shock proteins such as HSP70, HSP90, HSP27, and GRP78 show changes in expression in disc cells.
- These proteins may influence cellular homeostasis, inflammation, cell death, and the maintenance of the extracellular matrix.
- HSP-centered regulation of protein balance is proposed as a new therapeutic approach for intervertebral disc degeneration.
