Psilocybin-assisted therapy for hard-to-treat major depression in public healthcare: a randomized trial

Updated

Abstract

Sixty participants were randomized in a study examining the effects of a single 25-mg dose of psilocybin on treatment-resistant depression.

  • Participants had major depressive disorder with inadequate responses to multiple antidepressants or psychotherapy.
  • At week 3, the adjusted score difference on the depression scale (MADRS) was -10.41, indicating a significant improvement for those receiving psilocybin.
  • This improvement was sustained at week 6.
  • A total of 123 nonserious adverse events were reported in the placebo group compared to 164 in the psilocybin group.
  • Findings indicate the feasibility of psilocybin-assisted therapy and support the need for further confirmatory trials.
