Psilocybin may affect bipolar disorder.

Updated

Abstract

Two small clinical trials indicate that psilocybin combined with psychotherapy was safe and effective for treating BDII depression with large treatment effects.

  • No serious adverse events, including treatment-emergent mania or increased suicidality, were reported in both trials.
  • Concerns have been raised about psilocybin's safety in bipolar disorder patients, including risks of manic symptoms and sleep disruptions.
  • The majority of bipolar disorder patients believe psilocybin could improve their mental health, though experiences differ based on factors like substance use and dosage.
  • Future research is essential to clarify the efficacy and safety of psilocybin in treating bipolar disorder depression.
