Psilocybin use in treatment-resistant depression: A case report

Updated

Abstract

Psilocybin led to complete remission of depressive symptoms in a case study after previous inadequate responses to conventional antidepressants.

  • Juan initially experienced major unipolar depression during his studies, with treatments including Escitalopram proving insufficient.
  • After several episodes and significant side effects from Escitalopram, Juan sought an alternative treatment with psilocybin.
  • Following two administrations of psilocybin, Juan reported a rapid partial improvement, leading to full remission of his symptoms.
  • Since 2020, he has remained in full remission without the need for antidepressants.
  • A randomized trial indicated that 70% of psilocybin-treated patients experienced a reduction of over 50% in depression levels, compared to 48% for those on Escitalopram.
