Do psychedelics reduce inflammation? A review and analysis of studies on their effects on the immune system

Updated

Abstract

Of 9,195 studies screened, 61 studies met eligibility criteria for systematic review on the immunomodulatory effects of serotonergic psychedelics.

  • Most in vitro (19 out of 24) and non-human in vivo (25 out of 30) studies reported anti-inflammatory effects of psychedelics.
  • Human results were mixed, with anti-inflammatory effects observed in 3 out of 10 trials.
  • Meta-analysis of 18 in vivo murine studies showed a significant decrease in proinflammatory cytokines in inflammatory models (standardized mean difference = -1.23, 95% CI [-1.54, -0.92]).
  • No significant effects were observed in healthy murines (standardized mean difference = -0.06, 95% CI [-0.54, 0.43]).
  • Limited human evidence from four studies resulted in imprecise estimates, making it difficult to draw conclusions about the translational potential of these findings.
