Abstract
Currently, there are three FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder (OUD), all of which have limitations.
- Existing OUD medications are not especially effective and may cause withdrawal in dependent individuals.
- These medications require daily administration, which can be a barrier to treatment adherence.
- Single administrations of psychedelics have been shown to produce lasting anti-addiction effects in both humans and laboratory animals.
- Research on the therapeutic potential of psychedelics for OUD remains limited.
