Identifying stress-related beneficial bacteria in the human gut during high stress

Abstract

Treatments with Heyndrickxia coagulans and specific Lactobacillus strains significantly increased levels of Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia muciniphila.

  • Nine psychobiotic formulations were tested using a simplified version of a human gut simulator.
  • Increased levels of Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia muciniphila were observed with formulations containing H. coagulans and various Lactobacillus species.
  • Modulations in butyrate-producing bacteria were noted with specific combinations of H. coagulans and Lactobacillus species.
  • Dopamine levels rose with certain combinations of probiotics, indicating potential effects on neurotransmitter production.
  • Other metabolites, including Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFA) and ammonia, showed little change across treatments.
  • The study highlights the potential of psychobiotic formulations to enhance gut microbiota resilience under stress.
