Psychobiotic treatment and its effects on anxiety and depression in people with post-COVID syndrome

Updated

Abstract

Psychobiotic supplementation resulted in a 57.2% reduction in anxiety severity among participants recovering from COVID-19.

  • Participants receiving psychobiotic treatment experienced significantly lower median levels of depression and anxiety compared to those on placebo.
  • Depressive symptoms decreased by 50.9% in the psychobiotic group as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory.
  • The prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms significantly decreased in the psychobiotic group based on multiple assessment scales.
  • Butyric acid concentration significantly increased in the psychobiotic group during the study and was higher than in the control group at the end.
  • Changes in short-chain fatty acid concentrations in the psychobiotic group correlated with reduced anxiety severity.
