Essence

Adolescents with both dental caries and obesity had distinct oral and gut microbial and metabolite patterns that may relate to psychological disorders.

Evidence

This school-based cross-sectional study surveyed 1,024 adolescents aged 12-15 and performed 16S rRNA sequencing, untargeted metabolomics, and SourceTracker analysis in 90 biosampled participants, finding different oral-gut profiles and higher ectopic oral-to-intestinal colonization in those with caries and obesity.

Caveat

Because the biosample analysis was small and observational from a single junior high school, it shows associations rather than proving that microbiota changes drive obesity, caries, or psychological effects.
