Psychological treatments for inflammatory bowel disease

Updated

Abstract

In adults with inflammatory bowel disease, psychotherapy slightly improves quality of life, depression, and anxiety, with a standardized mean difference of 0.23 for quality of life.

  • Psychotherapy is associated with moderate improvements in quality of life (SMD 0.23), depression (SMD -0.27), and anxiety (SMD -0.29) in adults.
  • Patient education may have small positive effects on quality of life (SMD 0.19) and depression (SMD -0.22), but no effect on disease activity.
  • Relaxation techniques show small effects on quality of life (SMD 0.25), depression (SMD -0.18), and anxiety (SMD -0.26).
  • In children and adolescents, psychotherapy may significantly enhance quality of life (SMD 0.54), but results for anxiety are inconclusive.
  • Evidence regarding the impact of psychological interventions on disease activity is limited and suggests little to no effect.
