Psychological treatments for depression and anxiety in dementia and mild memory problems

Updated

Abstract

A total of 29 studies with 2599 participants were included in the investigation of psychological treatments for anxiety and depression in dementia and mild cognitive impairment.

  • Cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT, BA, PST) probably slightly reduce depressive symptoms compared to usual care or active controls.
  • There may be an increase in remission rates for depression at the end of treatment with cognitive behavioural therapies.
  • Cognitive behavioural therapies probably improve quality of life and activities of daily living in individuals with dementia or mild cognitive impairment.
  • Supportive and counselling interventions may have little or no effect on depressive symptoms compared to usual care.
  • Effects of both psychological treatment types on anxiety symptoms are very uncertain.
