Brain-Boosting Drugs to Ease Long-Lasting Thinking Problems After Traumatic Brain Injury

Updated

Abstract

There are currently no available effective pharmacological therapies for treating chronic cognitive deficits after traumatic brain injury (TBI).

  • Psychoplastogens, such as ketamine, psilocybin, and dimethyltryptamine (DMT), may enhance neuroplasticity and have therapeutic potential for various conditions.
  • Impaired neuroplasticity and other pathologies following TBI are similar to those seen in several psychiatric disorders.
  • The use of psychoplastogens for cognitive impairments in TBI is an emerging area with significant unmet needs.
  • Investigating psychoplastogens could address cognitive outcomes and improve neuroplasticity during the chronic phase of TBI.
