Puerarin improves liver fat buildup by activating energy and fat control pathways in liver cells

Updated

Abstract

Puerarin suppressed oleic acid-induced lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells.

  • Puerarin reduced levels of triacylglycerol and cholesterol in treated cells.
  • The expression of lipogenic enzymes, such as fatty acid synthase and sterol regulatory element binding protein-1, was decreased by puerarin.
  • Puerarin increased the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α, a key regulator of liver fat metabolism.
  • Activation of the AMPK signaling pathway is associated with the effects of puerarin on lipid metabolism.
  • Puerarin may help in lowering lipogenesis and enhancing antioxidant activity in hepatocytes.
