Lung imaging patterns in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease using detailed response maps

Abstract

Among 175 ex-smokers evaluated, 60% of those without COPD showed normal pulmonary imaging measurements.

  • Ex-smokers without COPD had a significantly larger fraction of normal mPRM voxels compared to those with COPD (60% vs 37%, 20%, and 7% for GOLD I, II, and III/IV disease, respectively).
  • The fraction of abnormal voxels indicative of small airways disease and mild emphysema increased with disease severity, showing significant differences among groups (all ≤ .001).
  • Normal mPRM measurements were positively correlated with better lung function metrics, such as forced expiratory volume in 1 second and diffusing capacity.
  • Abnormal mPRM measurements associated with small airways disease and mild emphysema were linked to decreased lung function and poorer quality of life in ex-smokers without COPD.
