Changes in liver cell mitochondria with aging, constant light exposure, and melatonin treatment

Updated

Abstract

Constant light exposure in male Wistar rats (n=480) led to significant mitochondrial aging by 24 months.

  • Mitochondrial aging was characterized by decreased numerical density, cristae number and length, and organelle deformation.
  • Massive hepatocyte death was observed in rats exposed to constant light by 24 months.
  • Exogenous melatonin administration prevented mitochondrial alterations, maintaining form factor and comparable mitochondrial density and cristae count to control groups.
  • Chronic circadian rhythm disruption appears to induce mitochondrial dysfunction as a key mechanism of accelerated liver aging.
  • Melatonin shows potential as a mitochondria-protective agent in the context of circadian disorders.
