Ramelteon added to treatment may improve sleep and daily body clock in people with schizophrenia

Updated

Abstract

Patients receiving add-on ramelteon showed a significantly greater increase in night-time melatonin levels after 4 weeks.

  • A 10.19 increase in night-time melatonin levels was observed in patients with predominantly positive symptoms.
  • Patients with predominantly negative symptoms exhibited an 18.74 increase in night-time melatonin levels.
  • Both groups experienced a decrease in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores, indicating improved sleep quality.
  • Ramelteon was associated with an increase in urinary melatonin levels in both symptom groups.
  • The increase in serum AANAT levels, which is involved in melatonin production, was noted in both groups receiving ramelteon.
  • Improvements in PANSS scores suggest that ramelteon may help alleviate some symptoms of schizophrenia.
