How the start of REM sleep behavior disorder relates to symptoms in Parkinson's disease patients

Updated

Abstract

54.8% of 115 Parkinson's disease patients were diagnosed with probable REM sleep behavior disorder (pRBD).

  • 33.3% of patients with pRBD reported onset before the appearance of motor symptoms.
  • Presence of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) was significantly associated with patients who had pRBD before motor symptoms, with an odds ratio of 5.04.
  • At a 5-year follow-up, patients with pRBD before motor symptoms had a higher risk of developing hallucinations, with an odds ratio of 4.68.
  • Patients with pRBD occurring before motor symptoms may represent a subgroup with more severe cognitive impairment.
