How Recreational Cannabis Use Relates to Sleep in the General Population
Updated
Abstract
Current recreational cannabis use is associated with poorer sleep quality in the general population.
- Current cannabis users reported more insomnia symptoms and longer sleep duration compared to non-users.
- Lifetime cannabis use was similarly linked to insomnia and later sleep timing, known as chronotype.
- No connections were found between cannabis use and daytime sleepiness for either current or lifetime users.
- Associations with poorer sleep quality were more pronounced in men and younger individuals.
- In contrast, experimental studies did not show any relationship between cannabis use and sleep quality or duration.
