Repeated COVID-19 infections and their link to worsening symptoms, death, and long COVID in people with chronic lung disease

Abstract

Among 313,760 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 49.1% experienced at least one COVID-19 event.

  • COVID-19 infection is associated with a 64% increased risk of moderate-to-severe COPD exacerbations.
  • The risk of mortality is 125% higher in COPD patients following COVID-19 infection.
  • With three or more COVID-19 infections, the risk of exacerbations and mortality further increases to 141% and 193%, respectively.
  • Long covid occurrences were more common in patients with multiple infections, with most cases arising after the first infection.
