Links Between Self-Reported Memory Problems and Tau Protein Build-Up in Specific Brain Areas, Independent of Overall Amyloid Levels

Updated

Abstract

Of the 133 clinically healthy older participants, 39 (29.3%) exhibited a high Aβ burden.

  • Greater subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is associated with increasing tau burden in the entorhinal cortex (β = 0.35; P < .001).
  • SCD is also linked to higher levels of Aβ accumulation (β = 0.24; P = .005).
  • No significant association was found between SCD and tau burden in the inferior temporal region (β = 0.10; P = .27).
  • The relationship between entorhinal cortical tau burden and SCD remains significant even after accounting for Aβ burden (β = 0.36; P = .001).
  • Exploratory analysis indicates that SCD may be predominantly associated with greater tau burden in the entorhinal cortex.
