Does REM sleep behavior disorder change as Parkinson's disease progresses?

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 22 Parkinson's disease patients with RBD, all subjects showed significant increases in REM Sleep Without Atonia (RSWA) measures after three years.

  • The frequency of RBD symptoms varied, with six patients reporting an increase, six a decrease, and ten remaining stable.
  • At follow-up, patients exhibited a worse Hoehn and Yahr stage and required higher doses of dopaminergic medication.
  • Performance in phonetic and semantic fluency tests significantly declined over the three-year period.
  • Changes in RSWA were significantly correlated with increased severity of levodopa-induced dyskinesia and motor fluctuations.
  • RSWA changes also correlated significantly with worsening executive functions and visuo-spatial perception.
