Advances in Traditional Chinese Medicine for Nervous System Diseases Related to Aging

Updated

Abstract

Over three billion individuals worldwide are affected by aging-related neurological disorders.

  • Aging is associated with the increased incidence and progression of neurological disorders through mechanisms such as endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress.
  • Chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, metabolic imbalance, and gut microbiota dysbiosis also contribute to these disorders.
  • These processes impair neuronal survival, synaptic plasticity, and cognitive and motor functions.
  • Traditional Chinese medicine may offer multi-component strategies that exert neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects.
  • Preclinical studies indicate that TCM interventions could modulate autophagy and restore metabolic balance.
  • High-quality clinical evidence on the safety and efficacy of TCM for these conditions remains limited.
