Living situation linked to thinking decline over time in older adults in China

Cognitive function decreased on average over a 12-year period among 17,333 older adults aged 65 and over.

  • Rural-to-urban and rural residents showed higher cognitive function than urban residents at the beginning of the study.
  • On average, cognitive ability declined across all residential groups during the study period.
  • Rural-to-urban and rural residents experienced a faster decline in cognitive function compared to urban residents.
  • Differences in cognitive function across residential statuses may indicate the influence of living environment on cognitive health.
