Daily activity patterns linked to thinking problems and dementia in older women: Results from the Women's Health Initiative

Updated

Abstract

A total of 763 older women were studied to assess the link between rest-activity rhythms and cognitive outcomes.

  • Weakened rest-activity rhythms, characterized by reduced amplitude and overall rhythmicity, are associated with adverse cognitive outcomes.
  • Lower overall rhythmicity and activity levels during the day are linked to a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and probable dementia.
  • Later activity timing is also associated with an increased risk for cognitive decline.
  • Women with lower amplitude and mesor experienced faster cognitive decline over the follow-up period.
