Resveratrol lowers cell damage and death in kidney filtering cells through SIRT1 and PGC-1α pathways

Abstract

High-glucose stimulation leads to a time-dependent decrease in SIRT1 and PGC-1α expression in mouse podocytes.

  • High glucose exposure is associated with increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in both cells and mitochondria.
  • Treatment with resveratrol improves the expression of SIRT1 and PGC-1α, which are critical for mitochondrial health.
  • Resveratrol reduces the apoptotic rate in podocytes and lowers the release of cytochrome C and DIABLO proteins into the cytoplasm.
  • Resveratrol enhances the activity of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I and III, as well as mitochondrial membrane potential.
