Microspheres that remove harmful molecules and carry cell signals to treat spinal disc degeneration

Abstract

In vivo studies demonstrated substantial attenuation of disc degeneration in a rat model of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) using antioxidant hydrogel microspheres.

  • The hydrogel microspheres are composed of black phosphorus nanosheets and extracellular vesicles.
  • In vitro analyses showed that the microspheres enhanced antioxidant capacity and mitigated oxidative damage.
  • The system functioned by releasing extracellular vesicles that reduced oxidative stress and suppressed cellular aging.
  • Transcriptomic analysis indicated that the microspheres inhibited inflammation through the IL-17-ferroptosis pathway.
  • The findings provide a basis for developing targeted therapies for degenerative disc disease.
