Cell aging in saliva glands in Sjögren's syndrome: recent findings and new treatment ideas

Updated

Abstract

Essence

This review proposes salivary gland cell senescence as a link between molecular stress, inflammation, and Sjogren's syndrome symptoms.

Evidence

This review summarizes research on Sjogren's syndrome, salivary gland senescence triggers such as infection, environmental factors, immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, telomere shortening, and DNA damage, and possible therapeutic targets.

Caveat

The abstract presents a mechanistic synthesis and treatment rationale, not direct clinical evidence that targeting senescence improves Sjogren's syndrome.
