Saliva Herpesvirus Levels Linked to HHV-6 and Long COVID Severity

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Higher salivary HHV-6 DNA was linked to worse Long COVID symptom scores, despite no overall shedding difference from controls.

Evidence

This matched observational study compared 45 Long COVID participants with 45 age-sex-matched controls using repeated saliva sampling, hormone assays, viral qPCR, and symptom questionnaires.

Caveat

The study found correlations in saliva only, with unclear mechanisms and no significant LC-control differences in hormones, EBV shedding, or HHV-6 shedding.
