Abstract

Salvia plebeia R. Br. ethanol extract (SPE) enhanced autophagy and reduced cellular senescence in both in vitro and in vivo models.

  • SPE increased the formation of autophagosomes and autolysosomes in human foreskin fibroblasts.
  • The extract reduced markers of cellular senescence, including SA-β-gal staining and specific senescence-associated factors.
  • Effects of SPE on cellular senescence were dependent on the autophagy-related protein Atg7.
  • In mice, SPE improved physical function and cognitive decline while reversing cellular senescence and enhancing antioxidant defenses.
  • Chemical profiling revealed rosmarinic acid as a major component responsible for some of SPE's beneficial effects.
