SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein may cause memory problems by triggering aging in brain immune cells through increased sugar metabolism

Updated

Abstract

SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein is associated with cognitive decline through its effects on microglial senescence.

  • SARS-CoV-2 N protein caused microglial senescence in both living organisms and laboratory settings.
  • The protein induced a shift in microglial metabolism toward glycolysis, leading to cognitive impairment.
  • Inhibition of glycolysis reduced the senescence caused by SARS-CoV-2 N protein and improved cognitive function in mice.
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction and fragmentation were linked to the activation of cellular senescence in microglia due to the SARS-CoV-2 N protein.
  • Targeting glycolysis may offer a therapeutic approach to mitigate cognitive impairments related to SARS-CoV-2 N protein.
