SARS-CoV-2 spike protein may cause ongoing blood clotting problems after infection

Updated

Abstract

Essence

SARS-CoV-2 spike protein expression may contribute to delayed coagulopathy and systemic inflammation after acute infection.

Evidence

This preclinical mouse vector-expression study tested Ancestral and Delta spike proteins in K18-hACE2 mice and compared IGFBP-1 and CXCL13 with serum samples from long COVID patients.

Caveat

The mortality, microthrombosis, and aspirin benefit come from a spike-expression mouse model, while the patient data are observational serum biomarker comparisons.
