Inflammation from the COVID-19 spike protein may increase irregular heartbeats

Updated

Abstract

Essence

SARS-CoV-2 spike protein alone may trigger inflammatory atrial remodeling that promotes arrhythmias.

Evidence

A preclinical mouse experiment injected WT mice with spike protein and, after five days, measured ECG arrhythmia burden, inflammatory and vascular injury markers, and atrial intercalated-disc remodeling against controls.

Caveat

The causal test was short-term in mice and used injected spike protein, so it does not quantify arrhythmia risk or mechanisms across human COVID-19.

Simplified

Key numbers

46
Increase in arrhythmia episodes
Total number of episodes observed in spike protein vs. control groups.
3.7
Duration of atrial arrhythmias
Median duration (seconds) of atrial arrhythmias in spike protein-injected mice.
