How Seizures and Sleep Are Affected by the Midnight Sun

Updated

Abstract

A total of 2337 studies related to status epilepticus, light exposure, and sleep were reviewed, with 5 studies focused on status epilepticus.

  • Status epilepticus was correlated with increasing daylength leading into summer at high latitudes.
  • More sunlight in summer advanced chronotype, while less sunlight in winter delayed it.
  • Extreme cases of light exposure could lead to free-running chronotypes in either direction.
  • Increased sleep fragmentation and decreased sleep duration were observed for both brighter and darker sunlight conditions.
  • A brighter sunlight vector may shorten and fragment sleep, potentially triggering more seizures.
