Self-esteem linked to health and patient-reported outcomes in older adults, regardless of frailty levels

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Higher was linked to better geriatric health status and patient-reported outcomes in older hospitalized adults independent of multidimensional .

Evidence

This secondary analysis of an RCT examined 107 hospitalized patients with comprehensive geriatric assessment measures and adjusted associations between baseline self-esteem and multiple geriatric outcomes over 6 months.

Caveat

Because this was a small secondary association analysis in hospitalized older adults, it cannot show that self-esteem causes the observed outcome differences.

What this is

  • This research investigates the role of in older adults' health outcomes, independent of .
  • Data from 107 hospitalized patients aged 60 and older were analyzed, focusing on 's predictive value.
  • The study examines associations between , geriatric syndromes, quality of life, and patient-reported outcomes.

Essence

  • is associated with various health outcomes in older patients, including quality of life and geriatric syndromes, independent of . However, it does not predict mortality or rehospitalization.

Key takeaways

  • Higher correlates with better nutritional status and fewer geriatric syndromes. Patients with elevated exhibited a lower prevalence of geriatric syndromes and a higher number of geriatric resources.
  • is linked to improved quality of life and lower depressive symptoms among older patients. Nominally significant associations were found between and both the EQ-5D-5L quality of life scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale.
  • did not predict mortality or rehospitalization rates over six months. The study found no significant association between and these outcomes, suggesting may exert a stronger influence.

Caveats

  • was assessed using a single scale, which may not capture its full complexity. Future studies should employ multiple assessment tools.
  • The study's exploratory nature means findings should be interpreted cautiously. The absence of significant correlations among adjusting variables indicates a need for further research.

Definitions

  • self-esteem: One's positive or negative attitude toward oneself and an overall evaluation of one's worth and value.
  • frailty: A multidimensional geriatric syndrome characterized by the loss of individual reserves and increased vulnerability to stressors.
  • patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs): Tools used to capture patients' perspectives on their health status, quality of life, and treatment outcomes.
