Semaglutide may affect the return of irregular heartbeat after treatment for atrial fibrillation

Updated

Abstract

Of the 437 patients enrolled, 158 opted for semaglutide therapy, resulting in a lower rate of atrial arrhythmia recurrence over 12 months.

  • The semaglutide group experienced a higher event-free rate for recurrent atrial arrhythmias compared to the control group (hazard ratio, 0.68).
  • Participants receiving semaglutide had a greater percentage of weight loss (-8.2% vs -4.6%).
  • Reductions in glycated hemoglobin were larger in the semaglutide group (-1.3% vs -0.6%).
  • Higher baseline body mass index and glycated hemoglobin levels were noted in the semaglutide group compared to controls.
